What are some of the consequences of drunk driving?

Driving while intoxicated puts your life at risk, as well as risking other drivers you encounter on the road. In addition to these consequences, there are a whole host of legal issues that may occur if you’re arrested for DUI. These consequences include exorbitant fines, loss of license, and even jail time in many cases. Very Well Mind explains some of what you can expect if you’re arrested for drunk driving.

You may be asked to install an ignition interlock device

Ignition interlock devices are in-vehicle breathalyzers. They work by measuring your blood alcohol content (BAC) before starting your vehicle. If your BAC is over the legal limit, your vehicle will not start. You may also be subject to additional fines on top of those assessed in court, and you may even be subject to jail time depending on the terms of your probation.

You could undergo an alcohol evaluation

People convicted of DUI must attend alcohol education classes. These classes teach attendees about the dangers of drinking and driving, while also assessing their drinking habits to determine if there is an underlying issue. If so, you may be ordered into rehab or a 12-step program to address your drinking habits and the problems they cause. These programs or court-ordered, so not attending could impact your probation.

Your auto insurance will go up

While it’s not related to the law, virtually all people convicted of DUI will experience an increase in their auto insurance. This is compounded by many other costs, including the cost for installing the ignition interlock device, attending the alcohol evaluation and rehab, and any court costs or fines you incur. Depending on the total circumstances, DUIs can be extremely costly.
