There are many different reasons people in Pennsylvania may decide to get a divorce. However, there are reasons for a divorce that are more common than others.

Based partly on a study that was conducted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a list that ranks leading causes of divorce was created. The study that was used involved the polling of 31 women and 21 men who had taken part in a prevention and relationship enhancement program before getting married. The purpose of the program was to instruct couples on developing their conflict resolution and communication skills.

One of the most common divorce reasons was not having support from family. A longitudinal study that was conducted over a course of 26 years examined 373 couples and found that if there was a close relationship between the husband and the wife’s family, the chances of divorce dropped by 20 percent. However, if there was a close relationship between the wife and her husband’s family, the risk of divorce was increased.

Poor health is another common divorce reason. According to one chief psychologist and marriage counselor, illness in a marriage result in pain, debt and a sense of losing oneself. Health problems can also result in one spouse being unable to uphold their responsibilities in the marriage.

Nearly 25 percent of the respondents to the NCBI study reported that there was emotional and physical abuse during their marriage. Many stated that the abuse grew gradually, and there would be intense periods of abuse followed by significant regret.

An attorney who practices divorce law may work to obtain a client’s desired divorce settlement terms. The attorney may suggest which legal strategies should be used to address disputes regarding the division of financial assets, spousal support amounts, child custody and other divorce legal issues.
